Late Start Information for Parents

Dear Parents or Guardians

Uinta County School District #1 understands the decision to close school due to inclement weather has an impact on families and the community. It is understood that we live in a climate where the weather can be severe at any time during the school year.

On rare occasions Evanston receives an exceptionally heavy nighttime snow. If the storm continues into the morning, hazardous road conditions interfere with school buses transporting students, parents driving their students to school, students driving to school, and employees being able to get to school on time.  If such conditions exist, we would declare a “Delayed Start” snow day rather than closing school for a full day.

If a “Delayed Start” snow day is announced, all school starting times and bus schedules would be moved back exactly two hours.  School starting times would be delayed for two hours and all bus routes would be exactly two hours later than the normal arrival time.  For example, if your bus pickup is at 7:30 a.m., the bus will arrive at the pickup location at 9:30 a.m.  Starting times for the schools on a “Delayed Start” schedule are listed below.

A “Delayed Start” would allow additional time for city and county road crews to plow the streets and district employees to open schools and plow parking lots and clear sidewalks. Parents who have to work can do so, knowing bus schedules will be delayed and schools will be open after a two hour delay.  Dismissal times for schools would not change.

UCSD #1 will use the calling systems “Code Red” and the district’s PowerSchool to notify parents.  Once a decision is made by school officials about school closure or a delayed start, the system will notify all parents and guardians through the emergency phone numbers and email accounts provided to the schools at the beginning of the school year.  Both systems can make all of these calls and send text messages in a matter of minutes.

When a decision has to be made regarding school closure or a delayed start, many different factors are taken into consideration; the primary factor, however, is student safety.  Factors that influence school closure or a delayed start include:

• Current weather conditions including amount of snow, temperature (including wind chill), and ground effect caused by wind (drifting snow and visibility).
• Local road conditions from a variety of sources including our transportation staff, from city and county road crews, and from the Wyoming Department of Transportation.
• School building conditions including public access to school buildings and to parking (snow removal).
• The weather forecast including radar for the entire school day. We prefer not making our decision based on weather predications, which are not always accurate, but sometimes this may be unavoidable. Once students are at school they would not be sent home early except in an emergency or a major unforeseeable event (loss of power and/or heat). In such an event the district would make every effort to provide adequate notice to all parents.

 

School district officials will try to make a decision regarding closure no later than 6:00 a.m. at which time the system would be used to notify all parents and guardians of a closure or delayed start. Also, the district’s web site (www.uinta1.com) and local radio stations will be notified immediately of the closure or a delayed start. Please be aware that not all of the local radio stations are “live” at 6:00 a.m.  On severe weather mornings, no announcement from UCSD #1 means that schools will be open and following normal schedules.

It is very important that parents and guardians keep the district updated with their latest phone numbers and emergency contact information. The “Code Red” system will be updated regularly by the district but can only call the phone numbers provided by parents. 

As mentioned before, it is understood that we live in a climate where the weather can be a challenge. Our job is to provide a safe and orderly environment where students can learn and grow.  Every effort is made to keep schools open and operating safely. However, UCSD #1 has no control of the weather or road conditions. A delayed start gives us another way to keep students in school and manage the severe weather. Additional information will follow from your school regarding keeping your emergency information up to date and necessary details.

El Distrito Escolar #1 del Condado Uinta entiende que la decisión de cerrar las escuelas debido al clima tiene un impacto en las familias y a la comunidad. Se entiende que vivimos en un clima donde el tiempo puede estar muy extremo y duro en cualquier hora durante el año escolar.

En ocasiones raras, Evanston recibe mucha nieve durante la noche.  Si la tormenta sigue hasta la mañana, las condiciones de las calles se ponen muy peligrosas y por lo mismo interfiere con la transportación de los estudiantes y hace difícil que los empleados del distrito escolar llegan a su trabajo a la hora debida. Si hay tales condiciones del clima, vamos a declarar un “Comienzo Retrasado” de nieve, en vez de cancelar la escuela por un día entero.

Si hay un día de nieve con un Comienzo Retrasado anunciado, todas las horas escolares serán atrasados exactamente 2 horas. Por ejemplo, si el camión de su niño normalmente llega a las 7:30 a.m., el camión llegará 2 horas después, a las 9:30 a.m. Las horas que las escuelas empiezan y acaban están alistadas abajo. Vea las horas para cada escuela en la parte de abajo.

Un comienzo retrasado dará tiempo adicional para los equipos de nieve de la ciudad y del condado a limpiar la nieve de las calles, y para los empleados del distrito de abrir las escuelas y limpiar las banquetas y estacionamientos. Los padres que tienen que trabajar pueden trabajar, al saber que los horarios de los camiones escolares serán 2 horas retrasados y que las escuelas serán abiertas 2 horas retrasados. Las horas de salida para cada escuela no cambia.

El distrito usará una sistema que se llama “código rojo” (Code Red) y el programa PowerSchool para notificar a los padres. Una vez que los oficiales escolares han decidido de cerrar o hacer un comienzo retrasado, la sistema avisará a los padres por medio de los números de emergencia y cuentas de correo electrónico que recibimos en el inicio del año escolar. El código rojo puede hacer estas llamadas  y enviar textos a todos en pocos minutos. Por eso, es muy importante que los padres dan los números de teléfono y otros informaciones actuales a sus escuelas.

Cuando una decisión tiene que ser hecho en relación con el cierre de escuelas o de un comienzo retrasado, muchos factores se tienen en cuenta; el factor principal, sin embargo, es la seguridad de los estudiantes. Los factores que influyen el cierre de la escuela o de un comienzo retrasado incluyen:

 

• las condiciones climáticas actuales, incluyendo la cantidad de nieve, la temperatura (incluida la sensación térmica), y el efecto del suelo causada por el viento (ventisquero y la visibilidad).

 

• estado de las carreteras locales de una variedad de fuentes, incluyendo el personal de transporte, de los equipos del camino de la ciudad y del condado, y desde el Departamento de Transporte de Wyoming.

 

• Las condiciones de los edificios escolares, incluyendo el acceso público a los edificios escolares y para el estacionamiento de carros (la limpieza de nieve).

 

• El pronóstico del tiempo incluyendo el radar para todo el día escolar. Preferimos no hacer nuestra decisión basada en predicciones meteorológicas, que no siempre son exactos, pero a veces esto puede ser inevitable. Una vez que los estudiantes están en la escuela, ellos no serían enviados a casa temprano, excepto en caso de emergencia o de un acontecimiento imprevisible mayor (pérdida de luz y / o calor). En tal caso, el distrito hará todo lo posible para proporcionar la debida notificación a todos los padres.

 

Los oficiales escolares del distrito van a intentar de hacer una decisión antes de las 6:00 a.m. En este tiempo el sistema va a hacer las llamadas por el distrito. También, la pagina del web del distrito (www.uinta1.com) y las estaciones del radio tendrán las informaciones de un cierro o un comienzo retrasado. Sepa que ni todas las estaciones del radio están “al vivo” a las 6:00 a.m. Si no hay un anuncio en las mañanas con condiciones meteorológicas extremas, las escuelas seguirán sus horarios normales.

Como fue dicho antes: se entiende que vivimos en un lugar donde el clima puede ser un desafío. Nuestro trabajo es proveer un ambiente seguro donde los estudiantes pueden aprender y progresar. Cada esfuerzo está hecho para mantener las escuelas abiertas y funcionando normalmente y con seguridad; no obstante, el distrito escolar no tiene controle del clima o condiciones de las calles. Un comienzo retrasado nos darán una oportunidad de permitir que los estudiantes no faltan a la escuela mientras que navegamos el clima severo. Ud. recibirá informaciones y detalles adicionales de su escuela acerca de cómo Ud. puede mantener sus informaciones de contacto en día.
